A homoeopathic paediatrician, a counselling expert and a freelance writer are a few words to describe my profession. My sole aim is to put forth practical piece of information that guides every one right in the direction, blending the medicos to a layman with a simple gesture to make the medical things a little less convoluted and comprehendible.

Ultrasound one of the most useful tool created in the medicine world helps diagnose issues in the most harmless and non invasive way. We at some point or the other in our lives must have undergone an ultrasound, do we actually know how it works, pros and cons. The following write is a small glimpse on the ultrasound to enlighten every reader on the wonderful equipment.

How it works?

An ultrasound works with the use of sound waves; the cyclic sound pressure above the normal human hearing limits reflects back and fetches the internal pictures in form of dark and lighted areas on the film / screen.

It is useful in cases

The major use of ultrasound is cases of abdominal issues including renal stones, gall stones, liver enlargements etc, and heart complaints. The aid not only helps detect but also measure the trouble within for example a renal stone less than 5 mm require no much bother just a few steps and a stone quite large may call for surgery and apt measures.

Ultrasound and pregnancy

Further its eminent use is in pregnancy; when the baby and the mother can’t take up the load of the harmful X - ray radiation and its effects this tool arise as a perfect solution. The sound waves used in are absolutely harmless and let one detect every issues related. So much so that a pregnant female can even take up to 5 scans within a single day with bothers to think over. The position, movement, heartbeat, attachment placement all can be detected with ultrasound in the most harmless way. It helps the doctor to keep the check on the entire 9 months gestation and also guides way to plan the delivery hours. With the positioning, attachment etc the nine hour proceedings can be well managed with just one ultrasound machine in vicinity. This is one tool that help a mother see her child blooming in the womb.

Trans vaginal ultrasound

This is a more specialised version where the ultrasound probe helps a physician take up a closer look with the equipment. Its use helps females struggling with issues and allows a doctor to easily detect and measure all. Uterine masses, tumours, fibroids, pregnancy, missed abortion, incomplete abortion; polycystic ovarian disease (PCOD) all can be detected and monitored at once with the single scan.

Drawbacks attached to ultrasound

Here the only flaw lies is the ineffectiveness in cases of foetal anomalies and abnormalities. The ultrasound can’t assure firm results when it comes to foetal brain development etc, these may go unnoticed with a scan and need other investigations to be processed through. Amniocentesis, chorionic villous sampling may have to be done to assure the foetal health in total.

Ultrasound is a gift to mankind that helps immensely and is a thing for which we shall never be able to clear all debts. It gives eyes to a mother within the womb to ensure the developing life in the right manner and gives a doctor enough insight on the whereabouts inside.
