“Smoking is injurious to health” is a statutory warning written on every cigarette packet. Still, people seldom care to read and follow it. Statistically, around the world approximately 30% of men and 19% of women and quite a large number of children smoke every day. In the whole world, if ten deaths take place, 1 of them is caused due to smoking. If sources are to be believed that it is said that by 2020, smoking will become the main cause of death around the globe. Needless to say, smoking has such alarming statistics, still the menace continues to so much widespread. Why? And one word has its answer -“addiction”. Why people find hard to quit smoking? Smoking contains tobacco, which contains nicotine, a highly addictive substance. Like other addictive drugs, nicotine makes body so much dependent on it that if body does not get it, the body will crave for it badly. Hence, if anybody tries to quit it, initially he has to make great deal of struggle in order to fight against this problem. Surprisingly, smoking is one habit, which over the years has quadrupled. Facts about Smoking-Hard to Believe • In a single cigarette, more than 4000 chemicals are present that are highly poisonous. Some of the chemicals that are present are naphthalene, acetone, butane, nicotine, etc. Naphthalene is the main element of the nail polish remover; butane is used in embalming, etc. • Smoking shortens the life of a person by 10 years or more than 10 years. • Cancer, coronary artery disease and emphysema are the most common and serious health effects of smoking. • 11 kinds of cancer of pancreas, bladder, mouth, kidney, etc are associated with smoking. • Smokers are twenty-six times are more prone to lung cancer as compared to non-smokers. • Smoking leaves negative effect on human’s heart, bones and joints, teeth, etc. The list does not end here only. It is limitless. Smokers also suffer from the problem of bad breath, yellowing teeth, wrinkles around the mouth, etc. Other rare side-effects are changes in texture and colour of the skin, cataract, reduced fertility, back pain, peptic ulcers, etc. If pregnant woman smokes; she is at higher risk from getting affected from premature labour, miscarriages, ectopic pregnancy, etc. Another horrifying fact which is associated with smoking is passive smoking is as deadly as active smoking. So, even if you are non-smoker, but a person sitting nearby you smokes, you are at equal chance to get affected from health problems. So, it is not wrong to say that smoking is one such activity which has no positive effects and hosts of negative effects. Despite knowing the fact, people prefer indulging in this activity. I wonder, why? A final conclusion is smoking is a slow poison and it really kills a person. So, if you find any of your near and dear ones engaged in this activity, make them understand ill-effects of smoking. We as a responsible human being can only guide the people; ultimate decision rests on them only that whether they want to give it up or not.
