Giving birth to a child is almost a renaissance for the mother as well, she not only bring in a new life to the world but also weave dramatic changes around her. Some combat easily and begin to enjoy the recent mother hood instantly but for some the joy may not be same and they may suffer post natal depression. The condition arises after child birth leaving the mother weepy and gloomy seldom the state may arise in the later part of the birth extending till a year.
One of the primary reasons behind the causation lies on the laid responsibility, sole bounding and bulky stature added on with the maternal bliss. It is a proven fact that pregnancy brings along an extra weight of about 10 to 12 kilograms leaving the mother not looking as enchanting as she may have appeared earlier. And the perception of being flabby and unhealthy too sometimes triggers the disease. Also with a strict closeness to the infant to feed etc is also taken up as a restriction negating freedom to a large extent leaves on depressed and lonely.
Signs and symptoms
Depending on the individual character, perception and reaction the disorder put forth varied presentations ranging from mood swings to physical presentations.
The sufferer may behave indifferent to the infant or partner with agitated behaviour and no desire to get involved in any activity.
There may be awkward sleep patterns with no appetite what so ever. Feeling of weakness and sinking sets in soon.
The patient may just keep sitting in a corner with absolute disinterest in the ongoing activities around. And in extreme cases the condition may leave the mother overly possessive with panic attacks even on a trivial sneeze of the child. There may be phobia or hallucinations where the patient lives in her own world feeling worthless. Often being social is a complete no for these females based on the perceived body distortion
Historical background
When pondered deeply these types of females often show positive signs of depression otherwise and present an exaggerated version in form of PND.
Also marital disharmony is too a chronic feature added. Very much obvious as with the support of a partner often a mother feels helpless and may surface the disorder in a demanding and non fulcrum aura.
Nutritional deficiencies during the course of gestation such as zinc or essential minerals favour the condition leading to the trouble.
What to do?
Treatment of PND shall begin from the moment of conceiving, the entire period of nine months should be free from negative vibes to give mother a joy within.
Regular checkups with required medications to fade out deficiencies are essential as well.
Psychotherapy with counselling sessions to prepare both the parents of their responsibility ahead is integral. The father and the mother should realise their true role and make a genuine effort to the whole process. A father should understand the comfort zone of her spouse and should work accordingly to combat with ease.
Being blessed with a child is desire of many and all of us should be grateful to the god most beautiful oeuvre and accept it with no disease in the vicinity.
